Toyota is planning to launch its car Prius in India in 2010. Prius is the world’s first mass-produced gasoline-electric hybrid passenger car. The car is likely to be imported as completely built units from Japan. The launch of the car in India will also be depending on the market conditions and tax concession from the government. Toyota was expected to launch Prius earlier in India but due to unfavorable conditions, the launch was postponed.
It is a known fact that the major reason why hybrid cars like Honda Civic Hybrid are finding it difficult to take off in India is the crippling import duties and resultant prohibitive prices. Due to high import duties, Civic Hybrid is not selling well in the country. Even the postponement of the launch of Prius had to do with the performance of Civic Hybrid in the country. The exact time of the launch of Toyota Prius in 2010 is not yet decided.
